Ichiro's Malt & Grain Limited Edition World Blended

What it is

A limited release version of Ichiro's Malt & Grain from Venture Whisky, bottled at 48% rather than the 46% of the standard White Label. Released in batches, so composition and character shift between them.

Where it comes from

Venture Whisky prints World Blended Whisky on the label and means it. Chichibu single malt is blended with malt and grain whiskies sourced from Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the United States, with England named in some releases. That places it outside the Japan Spirits and Liqueurs Makers Association standard, which requires distillation in Japan.

Ichiro Akuto has never tried to present this as Japanese whisky, which is worth noting given how many producers in the same position have. The imported sources are not named and the recipe is closely held.

How it's made

The sourced whiskies mature in their countries of origin, then come to Chichibu for further ageing in the Japanese climate before blending, so the Saitama seasons work on the imported spirit too. Vatting happens in large wooden vats. Non-chill filtered, no colour added. The limited editions typically draw on older or more selective parcels than the standard bottling, which is where the higher strength and the price come from.

What to expect

Rounder and deeper than the White Label, with more oak and more grip from the extra strength. Expect honey, stone fruit, buttered pastry and orange peel with spice on the finish. Batch variation is real, so treat any specific note as indicative.

How it compares

Against the standard Malt & Grain at 46%, this is the same idea with more concentration. Against Malt & Grain 505, the cask strength version at 50.5%, you're choosing between two step-ups from the same base. Against Suntory's Ao, Akuto's blend is better integrated. Against Chichibu's single malts, those are the pure article and vastly harder to buy.
