What it is

A 21 year old Japanese blended whisky bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, the independent bottling arm of UK drinks group Atom Brands. Batch 1, bottled at 47.9%. Boutique-y buys casks from producers and releases them under its own cartoon-labelled bottles, usually in small numbered batches.

Where it comes from

Independent bottlers frequently can't name the source, because the producer won't licence its trademark to someone else's label. So the honest answer here is that the distillery isn't disclosed, and we haven't found a credible source that names it.

That also means nobody has assessed this against the Japan Spirits and Liqueurs Makers Association standard, which in any case applies to association members labelling their own products. A 21 year old blend predates the 2021 rules by a long way. If you need to know what's in the bottle, this is not the bottle for you, and Boutique-y would say the same.

Bottled from a small parcel of casks at 47.9%, which is cask strength or close to it. Boutique-y typically bottles without chill filtration or added colour. Batch sizes are usually in the low hundreds, so batch to batch variation is total rather than marginal. Cask types aren't published.

What to expect

Twenty one year old Japanese blended stock from the era before the shortage, at close to cask strength. Expect depth, oak spice and dried fruit, with the grain component softened by two decades in wood. Beyond that, batch releases like this are genuinely hard to describe in advance.

How it compares

Against official 21 year old Japanese blends like Hibiki 21, the independent version costs less and tells you less. Against other Boutique-y Japanese releases, each batch stands alone. If the mystery is the appeal, this is a good buy. If provenance matters, it isn't.
