Japanese whisky bar and yakitori
A laneway yakitori bar with one of the deepest Japanese whisky lists in the country.
Tokyo Bird opened in 2014 off Belmore Lane in Surry Hills, modelled on the yakitori-ya and small cocktail bars of Tokyo. Yakitori means grilled bird, which is where the name comes from, and the skewers are the reason to stay for a second round.
The whisky is the reason to come in the first place. The bar describes its collection as one of the largest in Australia, and its published list backs that up: the Suntory and Nikka staples, aged Yamazaki, Hakushu and Hibiki up to Hibiki 30, a long run of Mars Komagatake and Tsunuki releases, Chichibu, Kanosuke, and rarities like Karuizawa. It is the easiest place in Sydney to try bottles that almost never reach a retail shelf here.
