What $100 buys you
Under $100 is blend territory, and in Japanese whisky that is not the compromise it is in some other countries. Blending is the craft the big producers are actually known for, and the bottles most people in Japan drink day to day sit right in this range. A blend is also what you want if you are making highballs, which is what a lot of this whisky was designed around.
You will find the occasional single malt down here, usually from the smaller producers rather than the big two. Age statements are rare at this price and their absence says very little on its own: stock ran short across the category years ago and bottles without an age on the label became the norm at every price.
One thing worth checking before you buy is whether what you are holding is Japanese whisky in the legal sense. Some of the best value bottles in this range are world blends, which include whisky distilled outside Japan and say so on the label. That is a legitimate style, not a con, but it is worth knowing what you are paying for.
